Due to Venezuela’s economic crisis, its indigenous people, including the Wayuu, are starving and migrating. I was glad to discover the Wayuu Taya foundation, which is working to help the indigenous peoples of the region with food aid and other supports, and to which I’ve just made a donation. It was founded by model and actress Patricia Velasquez, whose mother is Wayuu. I love seeing a woman who can succeed in the patriarchal beauty-ideal world using that power for good! She’s a fascinating person: Wiki tells me she competed on the Apprentice on behalf of the Foundation, and has an adopted daughter from a lesbian relationship. Also good news is that the foundation website lists several companies, including Microsoft, HP, and Fedex, as supporters. I am inspired and relieved that there is something we can do to help the indigenous peoples of Latin America.
